Understanding Elder Abuse: Part 3 When Family Violence Doesn't End with Age

When people think about domestic violence and elder abuse, they often imagine two separate issues.

In reality, they share many important similarities.

Both involve patterns of power and control. Both frequently occur within relationships where trust already exists. Both can involve emotional abuse, financial exploitation, intimidation, isolation, neglect, and physical harm.

In fact, many of the dynamics that characterize domestic violence can continue or reappear later in life.

An abusive spouse may continue controlling finances into retirement. An adult child may misuse an older parent's resources. A caregiver may isolate an older adult from family and friends. In each situation, the common thread is not simply conflict, it is the misuse of power.

Understanding these connections helps us recognize that abuse is not limited by age.

It also reminds us that the skills, resources, and partnerships used to address domestic violence can be valuable tools in responding to elder abuse.

At Branches, we believe every survivor deserves support, regardless of their age or circumstances. Our work is rooted in the belief that safety, dignity, and empowerment belong to everyone. Remember, the Branches hotline is available 24/7, is completely confidential, and is 100% free of charge. You can reach an advocate any time, day or night, at 304-529-2382.

When we understand the connections between elder abuse and domestic violence, we become better prepared to recognize warning signs, respond compassionately, and create communities where people can live free from violence and fear.

Because no one is ever too young—or too old—to deserve safety, respect, and hope.
