Understanding Elder Abuse: Part 1 What Elder Abuse Really Looks Like

When most people hear the word "abuse," they often think of children or intimate partners. Yet every year, millions of older adults experience abuse, neglect, or exploitation, often at the hands of someone they know and trust.

According to Safe Havens Interfaith Partnership Against Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse, approximately one in ten older adults experiences some form of abuse. Unfortunately, many cases go unreported, making elder abuse one of the most hidden forms of violence in our communities.

So what exactly is elder abuse?

Elder abuse occurs when an older adult is harmed, neglected, exploited, or controlled by another person. While physical abuse is often what people imagine first, elder abuse can take many forms:

• Emotional or psychological abuse

• Financial exploitation

• Physical abuse

• Neglect

• Sexual abuse

• Verbal abuse

• Spiritual abuse

  
  

Sometimes the signs are obvious. More often, they are subtle.

An older adult may suddenly withdraw from activities they once enjoyed. A trusted family member may begin controlling finances. Medical needs may go unmet. A caregiver may isolate someone from friends and family.

Because elder abuse often happens within relationships built on trust, it can be difficult to recognize and even harder to discuss.

The good news is that awareness is one of the strongest tools we have. When communities understand what elder abuse looks like, we become better equipped to recognize warning signs and support those who may be experiencing harm.
